How Can High School Coaches Get College Coaches to Watch Recruiting Film?

High school coaches usually serve as the connection between athletes interested in college football and the college coaches that are looking for the next recruiting class. College coaches are much more likely to open unsolicited emails and answer calls from high school coaches than athletes or their parents. This is why, high school coaches are the best resource for their athletes that are interested in playing college football.

High school coaches are always looking to help their athletes succeed on the field and in the recruiting process. In order to do this, they need to understand when, how and to whom to provide the right information in order to get their athletes seen.  So, we asked college coaches: how can a high school coach get college coaches to watch recruiting film?

Results were very interesting and very informative. We found that nearly 60% of all college coaches surveyed say that they watch all of the film that high school coaches send them. We also found that in order to increase the likelihood that college coaches will evaluate the film, high school coaches should include transcripts, send it to the right coach on staff, and include height and weight measurements.

However, when we dig a little deeper in the numbers we find that only 1 in 3 D1 coaches say they watch all of the recruiting films. The reality is that D1 coaches get overwhelmed with dozens of recruiting emails every day and don’t have time to watch every film sent to them. But, our data found that D1 coaches were 50% more likely to watch the film if it was sent to the right coach and the email included transcripts.

Therefore, it is very important to make a plan when reaching out to college coaches about your athletes. We suggest the following steps:

  • Try to identify the right coach that should be receiving the email. If you don’t know what coach recruits your school, check the team’s website, call the football office, or ask other HS coaches in the area

  • It is very important that you include a transcript for your players as it increases the likelihood of his tape being seen 50% in D1 schools alone

  • Be sure to include any other information you believe would be important in evaluating your player, such as height and weight measurements

We recommend Verified Watch List as a valuable tool to get your players’ information into the right hands.
